| Shoreham |
Shoreham is an attractive village located 4 miles north of Otford off the A225 on the banks of the River Darent. With a beautiful church and several attractive pubs the village has a rural feel yet is close to junction 4 of the M25 and has a railway station with commuter trains to London (via Swanley and Bromley). On the hillside across the valley is a large cross carved into the chalk commemorating those who died in the two World Wars. Shoreham Aircraft Museum houses an exhibition of aviation memorabilia from the Battle of Britain as well as other aerial engagements over southern England. The museum is open every Sunday from 10am to 5pm until the end of September. The History In Medieval times Scorham had a castle (now no longer visible) situated a mile to the north, on the west bank of the River Darent. Shoreham flourished in Georgian times and many fine houses were built: Water House (home at one time to Samuel Palmer), Shoreham Place (now demolished) and Darent Holme. At each end of the village stood water mills, to the south a corn mill and a paper mill (reputedly haunted) to the north. Shoreham was home to Samuel Palmer, the great English Romantic painter who took his inspiration from the surrounding countryside. |
