Castles and Stately Homes to visit in the Sevenoaks area. The area has many wonderful castles and homes open to the public. 



 
Chartwell (NT)

The family home, garden and studio of Sir Winston Churchill, Britain's wartime Prime Minister. The memorabilia gives a picture of the history of 20th century Britain and the studio contains many of Churchill's paintings.  
 



 
Chiddingstone Castle

This Georgian Castle is a modelling of a 17th century iron-masters house in picturesque surroundings with a fishing lake. It contains traditional furnishings, momentos of the Royal Stuarts, Samurai armour, swords and lacquer.

Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, dates back to 1270. It was later the home of Anne of Cleves and within the castle costumed figures feature "Henry VIII and his six wives". The Anne Boleyn Books of Hours Exhibition shows two rare and historic Books of Hours (prayer books) inscribed and signed by her.

The award winning gardens with a 110 meter herbacious border are a delight and special events are staged in the grounds. There is a Guthrie Miniature Model Houses Exhibition, and adventure playground, yew maze and splashing water maze.

A beautiful medieval manor house with many important features including a painted Tudor chapel, Crypt, Great Hall, billiard room, Robinson library, courtyard and giant dog kennel.

Knole (NT)

Set in a picturesque deer park is Knole which is known as a 'calendar House' due to the fact it has 365 rooms, 52 staircases and 7 courtyards.

There are many treasures at Knole including the first 'Knole' settee, beautiful tapestries, silver and paintings.  
 


 
Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle is a classic English castle, built on two islands in the middle of a lake. It is surrounded by 500 acres of parkland and wonderful gardens, with attractions which include a Duckery, an Aviary, a Maze and Grotto and a vineyard.

A historic family mansion and church near to the Roman Villa. It was frequented by Henry VIII and Queen Anne

Penshurst Place is one of England's finest historic houses set in the Weald of Kent's peaceful rural landscape. It has been the home of the Sidney family since 1552. Highlights include the unique medieval Baron's Hall with a splendid chestnut beamed roof.  
 


 
Quebec House (NT)

Quebec House is a gabled red brick 17th century house of Tudor origin and was the childhood home of General Wolfe. An exhibition, memorabilia, portraits and prints tell of the family and the Battle of Quebec.  
 


 
Squerryes Court Manor House (NT)

A beautiful 17th century manor house which has been the Warde family home since 1731. It is surrounded by 20 acres of attractive and historic gardens which include a lake, restored parterres and an 18th century dovecote.

Squerryes is 22 miles from London and easily accessible from the M25. Chartwell, Hever, Knole and Penshurst are all nearby, and some groups combine visits to Squerryes with Titsey Place and Quebec House. There are lovely views and peaceful surroundings. Visitors from far and wide come to enjoy the atmosphere of a house which is still lived in as a family home.  
 


 
Tonbridge Castle
Off Tonbridge High Street, Tonbridge (approx 5 miles south of Sevenoaks)
Tonbridge Castle is set within picturesque grounds overlooking the River Medway. Tonbridge Castle is perhaps England's finest example of a Norman Motte & Bailey Castle. Tours are available from the Tourist Information Centre (situated in the castle).
